Co Q10 is a crucial component of oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondrin, which converts the energy in carbohydrates and fatty acids into ATP to drive cellular machinery and synthesis. Co10 is important for synthesis of ATP,energy currency of all cells including muscle cells. Consequently, CoQ10 appears to improve physical activity and reduce feeling of fatigue. It helps protect against muscle damage resulting from high intensity physical activity, because it contributes to stabilize the muscle membrane, and this added stability can help muscle fibers be more resilient against mechanical damage. Reactive Oxygen Species(ROS) can be generated by various possible ways like 1. ROS Derived from (NADPH) Oxidase, 2. ROS Derived from NOS Uncoupling , 3. ROS Derived from Disturbed Mitochondrial Chain Reaction, etc. CoQ10 is endogenously synthesized lipid-soluble antioxidant, which not only protects from ROS, but prevents the oxidation of crucial proteins, lipids and DNA. The reduction of CoQ10 to ubiquinol is necessary in order to show its antioxidant function. The supplementation of CoQ10 reduces lipid peroxidation, while keeping the level of Vitamin E constant. CoQ10 is required to produce collagen, which is essential for the health and appearance of the skin, helps to reduce typical signs of aging. Owing to the essential role in mitochondrial bioenergetics, CoQ10 deficiency resulted into a variety of disorders such as CVD, diabetes, cancer, parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, aging, etc. CoQ10 acts as an anti-oxidant, scavenges free radicals and prevents LDL-peroxidation. This prevents the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved CoQ10 as a supplement for the management of mitochondrial disorders and CVD.
CoQ10 therapy restores the depleted mitochondrial energy status and contractility of cardiac myocytes, both of which are usually considered as main cause of heart failure.
Dr. Karl August Folkers is first of the two great men in the history of Coenzyme Q10 research. What Dr.Folkers visualized better than anyone else was the biochemical activity of the substance Coenzyme Q10 in the mitochondria of human cells. Whereas, Dr. Svend Aage Mortensen, was the Danish cardiologist who developed the rationale for and designed and led the multi-center study that was completed and published in 2014 for chronic heart faliure. While working on Coenzyme Q10 (1958), Dr. Folkers and other researchers isolated yellow fat-soluble substance that they found in the mitochondria of extracts of beef heart tissue. They called the substance Coenzyme Q based on its role as a coenzyme in the electron transfer chain. In 1970s: Coenzyme Q10 was used for the treatment of heart failure in Japan and Dr. Yamamura became the first cardiologist to treat heart failure patients with Coenzyme Q10. In 1990, then, Coenzyme Q10 became available as a dietary supplement in the United States and in Europe. Until that time, Coenzyme Q10 had been available as a prescription medical drug in Japan and as a research drug in the United States and Europe.
